[starttext]I'm a guitarist, composer and producer, living in Rome. I'm busking on the piazzas of Rome, playing classical pieces, gypsy music and flamenco. These videos have been taken this summer by my friend Klaus (username: klaustrophobia1). I use a prerecorded backing track and play the solo parts over it. I hope you like it, feel free to comment. All job offers are welcome (teaching in Rome, gigs anywhere), see my contact details in the video, or use youtube.
This is a combination of two versions, the first, slower part is the way they actually play it in greek tavernas. The second part is more similar to Dick Dale's version, used in Pulp Fiction.[endtext]

[endtext]

[starttext]"Have you seen the film ''Pulp Fiction'' with John Travolta ? The song was first performed by the Michalis Patrinos rebetiko band in Athens, Greece in 1927. As with almost all early rebetika songs (a style that originated with the Greek refugees from Turkey), the song's actual composer has never been identified, and its ownership rested with the band leader. The song was rearranged as a solo instrumental guitar piece by Dick Dale in 1962 and was used a a soundtrack in the Pulp Fiction movie.

This is my band's *Ixis Afixis' version.I had the camera right behind me but we had poor lighting so the quality is not the best.In this version we are using a Greek traditional instrument called 'bouzouki' played by Stelios Petrakis (www.youtube.com/steliospetrakismusic)[endtext]

[starttext]The Jewish Monkeys are a wacky Klezmer burlesque Trio. Their story begins in the 1970's, where two of them meet in the Frankfurt Synagogue boy's choir. Three decades later, joined by a third member, they become the deliciously irreverent trio they are today, dubbed The Jewish Monkeys. Armed with politically-incorrect lyrics and a Marx Brothers sense of nonsense, the Jewish Monkeys' pandemonium experience is one of a kind. Their music keeps pushing the envelope and their lyrics cover a range of topics: the mid-east conflict, the environment, over-eating, world-poverty, terrorism and child-molestation among others. All of these, they tackle with equal erratic blitheness, sparing no-one. While they all live in Israel their backgrounds are European. Gael Zaidner grew up in Belgium and both Dr. Boiko and Jossi Reich hail from an unlikely stock of German Jews (yes, they still exist, incredibly). Since their inception, they've been groomed by their musical father, musical-producer Ran Bagno, who turned their chaotic ideas into professional music productions. Among others they worked and performed together with Tel-Aviv guitar-bands Yahalomin (Diamonds) and BoomPam. Like all Jewish conspirators, the Jewish monkeys too are well educated, well connected and filthy rich. Jossi Reich, the founding monkey and financier is an entrepreneur and co-owner of the German label Essay-Recordings. The veterinarian Ronni Boiko is well-known among the well to do cats and dogs of his neighbourhood and Gael Zaidner is a shrink. Despite being the movers and shakers they are, members of The Jewish Monkeys dabbled in music before. These forays include Jossi Reich's collaboration with acclaimed German Sax player Tobias Rüger and his Jazz-Band "Die Schwindler" and the soundtrack for German TV's NDR "Die Kinder von Theresienstadt' (The children of The resienstadt) by Ronni Boiko. In the late Nineties, with careers and families under way, Jossi Reich and Ronni Boiko met Gael Zaidner and were impressed by his uncanny comical genius. His theatrical slant inspired them to create their first project: a cover version to Harry Belafontes Banana-Boat-song. Their advice to the word: Make peace in the Middle East with The Jewish Monkeys, Harry Belafonte's Banana-Boat and a bit of Hava Nagila!

The term kemenche (Turkish: kemençe, Armenian: K'amântcha - Քյամանչա , Laz: Ç'ilili - ჭილილი, Azerbaijani: kamança, Persian: کمانچه, Greek: κεμεντζές, λύρα) is used to describe two types of three-stringed bowed musical instruments:

  1. a bottle-shaped lute, closely related to the Cappadocian Kemane, found in the Black Sea region of Asia Minor, it is also known as the "kementche of Laz" or Pontic kemenche and
  2. a pear-shaped bowl lyre known as Classical kemenche (Turkish: Armudî kemençe), found mainly in Istanbul and the Eastern regions of Turkey and is closely related to the Byzantine lyra (Turkish: Rum Kemençe).

Both types of kemenche are played in the downright position, either by resting it on the knee when sitting, or held in front of the player when standing. It is always played "braccio", that is, with the tuning head uppermost. The kemenche bow is called the doksar (Greek: δοξάρι), the Greek term for bow.

[starttext]The BlackTails performing live at the Center for the Arts in Homer NY October 18th, 2008.

THE BLACKTAILS Best described as "Stevie Ray Vaughan Meets Santana Meets the Pulp Fiction Soundtrack" - A nasty brew by The BlackTails

With influences drawn from American Roots Music to West Coast Swing, Gypsy Jazz, Surf Rock & Blues, The BlackTails are known for red hot musicianship and unique musical arrangements. The band blends a seamless fusion of classic songs and original material, with high energy performances and dynamic improvisation.

On the heels of their debut album, "Spy Lounge", Scotch Whiskey company Dewars drew them into the spotlight by licensing the track "Off the Rack" and promoting the group as a featured band in their 2006-2007 "Dewarisms" national advertising campaign.

While the album Spy Lounge features original material, the live show blows out to include classic Film Noir / T.V music themes, like Mission Impossible, James Bond, The Pink Panther and more. In the tradition of classic groups like The Ventures, and Booker T & The M.G's, as well as, modern pioneers like Brian Setzer, Spy Lounge is a raucous cocktail of Groove, Vibe, and Fun. visit myspace.com/theblacktails for more information[endtext]

[starttext]The Richter Uzur Duo: Brad Richter, guitar and Viktor Uzur, cello.
About the performance (liner note excerpted from their CD, String Theory):
Misirlou/Bumblebee (Mash-up I), Richter/Uzur
This was the first of what the duo now calls Mash-ups - pieces in which they take themes or large sections of rock songs and classical pieces, combine them with original music, and end up with something quite new. Here the music stays closer to its original form than in later mash-ups. Misirlou is a Greek folk song. It was first performed by the Michalis Patrino rebetiko band in Athens, Greece in 1927. As with almost all early rebetika songs (a style that originated with the Greek refugees from Turkey), the song's actual composer has never been identified. Misirlou was made more famous by Dick Dale and the Del-tones in their surferesque cover of the tune from 1962 (which subsequently appeared in Quentin Tarintinos Pulp Fiction a favorite film of the duos and one of several that inspired music for this recording). Flight of the Bumblebee is an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, composed in 18991900.[endtext]

[starttext]A music photo video, with the Paintings of Max Ernst (1891-1976) and the music of Miserlou By Ronnie Aldrich
=====================
Max Ernst was born on April 2, 1891 in Brühl, near Cologne. Ernst began studying classical philology but then became interested in art and literature through the 1912 Cologne Sonderbund Exhibit and his friendship with August Macke, whom he met in 1910-11. He became acquainted with the 'Blaue Reiter', Apollinaire, Delaunay, Georges Grosz and Wieland Herzfelde as well as Hans Arp.

He fought in World War I in France and Poland, and recovered from clinical death, an experience which was to deepen his decision to take up art. Married the art historian Luise Straus (1918) and the next year, visited Paul Klee and created his first paintings, block prints and collages, and experimented with mixed media. Along with J. T. Baargeld and Hans Arp, he founded the Cologne Dada group, and in 1921 was invited by André Breton to Paris, where he befriended Tristan Tzara and Sophie Taeuber.

[starttext]The Sound Waves specializes in the unique "surf" sound of the 60's made famous by such artists as Dick Dale, The Bel-Aires, Chantays, Eddie and the Showmen, Ventures and many others. Their sound is true to form and pays tribute to these greats. In addition to instrumentals, Sound Waves has a large vocal repertoire from the era as well.

"The SoundWaves" pay tribute to the great instrumental surf bands of the 60's. The original SoundWaves' core members were all members of various surf bands in their high school days in the early to mid-sixties. 40 years later the surf music scene was still thriving in Southern California as well as the rest of the world and the SoundWaves formed originally to play at their high school class's 40th reunion. In March of 2005, the SoundWaves won the annual "Taste of the Bands" at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro placing first out of twelve bands competing and earning top spot at the Taste in San Pedro festival in August of that year. The members of Sound Waves have played professionally in one form or another since their high school days as well.

In addition to surf instrumentals, the SoundWaves offer a wide range of 50's 60's vocals to their extensive repertoire. They're favorite venues are surf related events, high school reunions and charity events.

In order to recreate the authentic sound of the era, Sound Waves uses mostly vintage Fender guitars and amplifiers from the 60's which are identical to the equipment originally used by musicians of the day.

[starttext]Famous "Misirlou" is an old greek rebetiko song....this is the original version from Mike Patrinos from 1930. The word Misirli in turkish means girl from Egypt. The song refers to a cross-faith, cross-race, relationship, a risqué subject at its time. Enjoy!!![endtext]

The Lively Ones are a famous classic surf band and regarded by many as the best Classic Surf Band of the classic surf period who performs once or twice a year. Three of the original members still work in this group; Jim Masoner, Tim Fitzpatrick, and Joel Willenbring. John Benton and Tracy Sands are also members of the band. Jim Masoner is regarded, by most surf musicians and fans, as one of the very top surf guitar players from the classic surf period. [endtext]

[postlink]http://afmarxtest.blogspot.com/2010/05/anita-darian-misirlou.html[/postlink]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCeFV7b-y_cendofvid
[starttext] Here is an extract of another ultra-rare record, "East of the Sun", by the "Armenian Yma Sumac", Anita Darian.
Anita Darian has been a serious working singer for nearly 50 years. She's worked in everything from opera and classical recitals to television jingles and cartoon voice-overs. She has a classically-trained voice with a four-octave range, which has enabled her to take on some remarkable jobs over the years. She sang on a number of albums of Broadway musicals, including "The King and I" and "Show Boat" for Columbia Records. She sang and played the kazoo at a performance of Mark Bucci's "Kazoo Concerto" at one of Leonard Bernstein's famous Young Peoples' concerts with the New York Philharmonic, which later earned her a part in the recording of John Corigliano's eccentric take-off, titled "The Naked Carmen", on the original Bizet opera. And hundreds of millions of listeners have heard her demonstrate her vocal range without knowing it, because she provided the swooping counter-melody behind the tenor lead on the Tokens' #1 hit, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", a cover of a South African song written by Solomon Linda.
"East of the Sun", recorded in 1960 with Frank Hunter handling the arrangements, is a collection of genuine and ersatz Near/Middle Eastern songs such as "Misirlou" and "Gomen Nasir". It's a treat to hear the rare vocal version of "Misirlou", but Darian's style is operatic rather than exotic. She obviously had the capacity to go the Yma Sumac route, but she sticks to an approach more heard in recital halls than cocktail lounges. Darian is still performing today and was featured in a 2003 Cabaret Festival in New York City.
Enjoy! [endtext]
